ELECTION UPDATE: Brown and Wilson lead

A progress report on the Mount Maunganui/Papamoa by-election shows Leanne Brown in the lead by a slim margin of 32 votes, ahead of Clare Wilson.

Leanne Brown (top right) and Clare Wilson (centre) are out in front in the Mt Maunganui/Papamoa by-election, ahead of Murray Guy (bottom left), Matua Parkinson (bottom right) and Janet Peters (top left).

The progress report from returning officer Warwick Lampp says votes received so far are:

BROWN, Leanne: 3,157

WILSON, Clare: 3,125

GUY, Murray: 1,169

PARKINSON, Matua: 857

PETERS, Janet: 632

INFORMAL: 6

BLANK VOTING PAPERS: 9

The result is based upon the counting of approximately 98 per cent of the returned voting papers.

The progress result does not include approximately 250 voting papers returned today that are still in transit to the processing centre. The outcome of this by-election may change once all voting papers have been counted.

The voter return was 28.5%, being 8,955 voting papers excluding voting papers in transit to the processing centre and special votes.

'NZ Post have advised us that this week there is maintenance being carried out on the Christchurch Airport runway, which is likely to delay the delivery of normal post and courier packs to Christchurch this week,” says Warwick.

'We arranged for our usual elections mail out of the Tauranga mail centre to be intercepted by NZ Post and couriered to our office, but I'm still thinking that we may have some delays with these deliveries.

'That means that we could have a few hundred voting papers in transit to us at the time that we are due to announce the progress result on Tuesday afternoon,” he says in an email to candidates earlier.

'I will advise you all of the likely impact of this at the time, once we get a better feel from NZ Post as to how many voting papers are in transit, and when we might receive them.”

The progress result includes all voting papers received in Christchurch at close of polls. A final result will be announced once the voting papers in transit today arrive.

'I'm not sure of this timeframe, but it's likely to be Thursday or Friday,” adds Warwick.

Good to see that a local candidate will apparently win the local ward.
