Strand dining concept touted

A concept to turn Wharf Street into a themed dining precinct has been presented to council.

Mainstreet Tauranga presented the concept at a City Delivery Committee meeting yesterday to transform Wharf Street into a themed, dual-use dining precinct street that is pedestrian friendly.

Mainstreet Tauranga is proposing to turn Wharf Street into a themed dining precinct.

Mainstreet Chair Glenn Tuck says the concept has been developed in full collaboration with business and property owners in Wharf Street and has their support.

'This initiative is really about what the businesses in Wharf Street have been asking for, for some time,” says Glenn.

'Mainstreet Tauranga is now taking the lead to move this initiative forward, for the betterment of the street and the city centre.”

The proposed concept will see the street turned into a pedestrian-friendly dining precinct with a central pedestrian and vehicle access lane.

'The actual layout of the street is still in development,” adds Glenn, 'but in essence, the dual-use option allows us to ensure we can create a unique dining precinct, at the same time as ensuring we accommodate the need of businesses to function efficiently in terms of delivery vehicles and minimise city traffic disruptions.

'We are still in the development phase, so it is exciting to see it come to fruition and the initial format will be trialled and modified as needed before a more permanent option is considered for the street.”

Glenn says the Wharf Street concept will be rolled out in several stages.

'This initiative has great potential for the city centre,” he adds, 'but we want to make sure it is an inclusive and collaborative approach. How the street functions best, for the businesses in the street and the people dining there, will be something we can assess over time.

'We want to start with an initial concept and see how we can modify it for best use long-term.

'Street activations and precinct building are important initiatives for Mainstreet. It's a vital part of our work to substantially contribute to the revitalisation of the city centre.”

Glenn says this initiative signals Mainstreet's pro-active approach to developing key areas in the city with a strong theme that the public can enjoy and businesses can benefit from.

'Wharf Street is the natural environment for this dining precinct,” he adds, 'and we are excited to have such strong support for this initiative. Now the hard work begins in getting it up and running in the next few weeks.”

but will they listen, every city in the world has something similar to what is being touted here, it just takes the T.C.C a little longer than most.

Good on Glenn for taking a proactive stance and coming up with new ideas

As seen on TV...oh wait no it was Rotorua, again Tauranga lagging behind other centers. And we like to call ourselves a progressive city. Good idea and at-least we are finally starting to see whats needed to create a vibrant city, but hey lets be a leader not a follower, come on TCC.

Nice Idea BUT

Posted on 17-02-2015 10:28 | By How about this view!

Is this another case for ratepayers to finance local privately owned businesses income streams? Not sure they have thought through the concept properly either, where will the buses go? Would you want to be sitting down to a nice meal and have to put up with diesel fumes as the Buses cruised slowly past negotiating pedestrians and market umbrellas? And on that point, WHY do we not have a buses only precinct outside the Library/ council building?

wharf street

Let's be bold and make the strand instead of wharf street the food centre. It gets closed at easter for jazz festival with no apparent disruption to downtown.

Really ??

Here's an idea, why not convince restaurants etc to start moving into the Red Square, which is already closed to cars & buses. We won't lose any more car park either. Stop wasting time & money empire building TCC councillors.

Just do it Mainstreet.

Funny thing is, most of this idea has nothing to do with TCC. Only the roading changes would be a TCC issue. The rest of it can go ahead already :)

Don't forget the scenic views that TGA has to offer. Why are most of the restaurants around the township and the Mount on ground level where no one can actually view the seaside panorama - all they look out on is roadside - why not put commercial retail shops on the ground floor and build restaurants above with balcony views. That way you can shop then stay in town and have a meal above whether breakfast lunch or dinner.

No Silver Bullet for CBD

Imagine this street on a rainy day. It needs to be covered from the elements; this costs money. Who's gonna pay?

Yeah, Nah.

Agree with Rogue and Caveman. There is not even a decent outlook to be had in that street. I suspect there are more of us that value what limited parking there is over an 'Eat Street' concept. Just another reason to avoid the CBD.

Daft idea

Willow St always looks like it needs a good scrub - the pavement always looks grubby. Take the concept around the corner to Red Square. Dining on Willow just doesn't appeal, especially with traffic volume. And if thinking is to take out the traffic, well that's even more daft! No way would this concept be 'to the betterment of the city centre', can't believe someone thinks it would.

What about business parking

Posted on 18-02-2015 06:48 | By Angel74

that is accessed by a driveway in wharf street plus trucks unloading goods for the businesses......

Strand is Food Centre!

Posted on 18-02-2015 08:13 | By Mackka

The Strand is lined with 'eateries' - it has the views and has been set out to be family friendly. Millions have been spent on the Strand - we don't have the population to keep more food retailers in business! Stupid idea - forget it!!

Good idea but

Not enough car parking in that part of Tauranga. Doubt if patrons will hike for miles to get a meal. Maybe create a hub in Sulphur Point and shuttle patrons in horse drawn buggies? That should fit with TCC planning.

Profit

The Dining places on the strand seem to struggle without closing off more streets taking away valuable parking. It will force people to eat in suburbs as no ones wants to walk a long way to eat.
