White Ferns fall to England in game two

England well and truly reversed their first loss to the White Ferns when they defeated the New Zealand side by 90 runs.

England won the toss and elected to bat in the second ODI against the New Zealand White Ferns at the Bay Oval yesterday. The match was the second game in a five match series.

The visitors got away to a strong start, courtesy of England captain Charlotte Edwards who went on to top score with a gritty 65.

Edwards and Sarah Taylor were piling on the runs when the White Ferns introduced ex Bay of Plenty all-rounder Anna Petersen.

On the last ball of her first over, Petersen grabbed the valuable wicket of Sarah Taylor.

Petersen took another wicket in her second over, with her resume reading, two wickets at a cost of two runs.

After the England skipper was dismissed the England side were in a solid position at 152/6.

The New Zealand team eventually removed the visitors for 194, with four balls remaining in their turn at bat.

Petersen was the best White Ferns bowlers taking four wickets for 25 runs, with Morna Nielsen and Erin Bermingham grabbing two wickets apiece.

The New Zealand reply failed to gain any real momentum with the first two wickets falling for just 19 runs.

At three down, with 47 runs on the board, the White Ferns looked to have some chance, but they slumped to 75/6 to be in real trouble.

Petersen batting at eight top scored with 21, which told the tale of the New Zealand side's lack of any meaningful partnerships, with the home side bowled out for just 104.

Anya Shrubsole caused plenty of damage with the ball taking four wickets at a cost of 36 runs, with both Katherine Hazell and Danielle Hazell bowling economically to grab two wickets each.

With the five match series tied up at one game apiece, both sides will have a couple of days to regroup and reflect, before going into game three at the Bay Oval on Sunday.
