By-election date looms

Local Mount and Papamoa residents have just seven days left to correctly enrol to vote and have their say on who becomes the next councillor representing the area on Tauranga City Council.

Registrar of Electors for Tauranga and Bay of Plenty electorate's Lesley Christophers says eligible electors who haven't enrolled or updated their details can do so up to and including Monday February 16, but they cannot enrol on the day of the by-election – February 17.

Janet Peters, Leanne Brown, Clare Wilson, Murray Guy, and Matua Parkinson are contesting the vacant Mount/Papamoa ward seat.

'They will also need to contact the Electoral Officer at the Tauranga City Council to apply to cast a special vote,” says Lesley.

Postal voting will close at midday on Tuesday, February 17 while enrolments for the by-election close at 4pm on Monday, February 16.

There are five people contesting the Mount/Papamoa seat vacated by NZ First MP Clayton Mitchell late last year; Janet Peters, Leanne Brown, Clare Wilson, Murray Guy, and Matua Parkinson.

Enrolment forms are available from any PostShop or can be downloaded from the elections website at: www.elections.org.nz

People can also call: 0800 36 76 56 if they have any enrolment queries and they can check their enrolment status on the elections website or on any roll at any PostShop, courthouse or public library.

Important choice for Mount Papamoa's identity

I think there's more to this byelection. The people have the choice of talented locals or a talented outsider and it's a hard decision. But if they vote for a non-resident ward councillor, there goes any reason for having separate wards. We could just all vote at large and maybe that wouldn't be a bad thing. Tauranga and Mount Papamoa should probably be one big happy family anyway.

I think choose a true local

I'm sure there's a capable person able to represent the people of the Mount and Papamoa. A person who actually lives in the ward. I'm amazed that Murray Guy is running for this ward. Then again I suppose his council did put a lot of money into the Mount. I'm thinking of the $5 million into Baypark and the purchase of a Speedway business. It's just that I don't think that's a good use of ratepayers money.

$5m into Baypark was definitely a waste of ratepayers money. But don't forget the rest of the very sad story either, started with $12m, losses since $10m or so, $4m in replacement funds yet to be put aside, extra grounds and lights out the back $2.8m, more parking that isn't used for anything since $1.6m, ASB Arena $50m and a further $30m pledged by Councilors from ratepayers future rates collect, ops I mean more debt. That amounts to a absolutely huge amount. Then add the interest on all of it as it was borrowed one way or another, $79m odd for 7-8 years, say $4.5-5.0m/pa so that is another $35-40m or so, then add the ASB Arena losses as well of about $6.5m/pa for 4-5 year also, that adds to about $110m that either is paid in rates or borrowed of will come out of rates sooner or later

Stop looking back
