Branch drops close to road

Commuters in Welcome Bay were carefully shepherded past a tree that dropped a branch beside James Cook Drive this morning.

The liquid amber branch was initially cordoned off by police amid fears it could impact passing traffic.

The roadside shoulder was also closed before city council contractors arrived and cleaned it up.

No reason was given for why the branch fell, with weather conditions a possible factor alongside the possibility it could have been snagged by passing traffic.

...looking at the profile of the tree, shearing off a long limb in full leaf 'loaded' with heavy rain is a very likely scenario. Seen it happen before.

OMG talk about a story about nothing. Really SunLive you send a reporter and a photographer to the scene of a tree branch on the ground? Tauranga is now officially the most boring place in the world. The only thing more unbelievable is the Nanny State response - police, road works vehicle, road cones. The road cones are so obviously creating more of a traffic hazard for commuters to be 'carefully shepherded past' that it beggars belief. This world is in a sorry state when such a minor event as this creates such a huge response. Get real people.

Be very afraid people...

This very branch could well move all by itself and throw itself at a passing motorist..!! so, out come the usual 17,000 road cones, dudes in hi-vis waving there arms and plenty of over reaction..unbelievable...
