Child dies in Oropi crash

A child is dead after a car collided with a power pole before ending up in a paddock on Oropi Road overnight.

The child, a passenger in the vehicle, died at the scene after the crash near Castles Road about 7.45pm.

Police in a statement say the driver of a Nissan vehicle, a local woman, failed to negotiate a left-hand bend striking a power pole causing it to break.

The car came to a stop in a paddock on the left-hand side of the road with the power pole over the road – cutting power to Ohauiti and Oropi.

Police confirm the child died at the scene while the woman didn't sustain any injuries but was taken through to Tauranga Hospital.

A Greerton Fire Brigade spokesperson says when firefighters arrived the woman was out of the vehicle while the child was still inside.

He says after surveying the scene firefighters started administering first aid. It is understood he child was removed to an ambulance for medical treatment but subsequently died.

A police crash analyst attended the scene and enquires are still continuing, says police.

Oropi Rd was closed with diversions in place through Warner and Hereford road's with contractors working on the power lines through the night.

Police would like to speak with any witnesses of the crash who have not yet been spoken to by police and ask them to contact Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300.

My thoughts are with that woman and her family, I know this road well and that corner is deceptive, even more so after a month of no rain then a sudden downpour
