A rescue helicopter pilot says the 44-year-old Hamilton man appeared to be suffering from a reaction from the insects.
He was treated at the scene and airlifted to Rotorua Hospital in a comfortable condition for further assessment.
The helicopter was deployed as the site was isolated.
Lake Rotoehu is the smallest in a chain of three lakes to the northeast of Lake Rotorua in New Zealand's North Island. It is located between the city of Rotorua and town of Whakatane.
