What's on Today? Frocks on bikes

Good morning Sunners,

Welcome to the first day of February 2015! It's come around fast, but here at SunLive we're starting the new month with a bang!

Participants dress-up for the Frocks on Bikes event.

Frocks on Bikes

There's plenty of action happening in and around the city today – even Waihi Beach is getting in on the fun with its first free Frocks on Bikes event at the seaside township.

Sponsored by local businesses, and a joint venture for Bike Wise month between Waihi Beach Community Events and Promotions and Sports Bay of Plenty, the ride will give cyclists of all ages and fitness levels the opportunity to cycle Waihi Beach in their Sunday best frocks.

There's prizes for best dressed male and female and best decorated bikes, as well as spot prizes.

Registration for the free event is 10.30am at Waihi Beach Hotel, with prizegiving at 1pm. Helmets must be worn while cycling.

For more details, call 07 863 4363, or see the Waihi Beach Info Facebook page.

Volleyball

Championship glory is on the line in the Mount Maunganui Open volleyball competition today as the nation's best beach volleyballers go head-to-head.

Held at Mount Maunganui's Main Beach this weekend, the third National Beach Tour event of the summer invites the country's top 24 men's and women's teams to battle for the title. They'll also be eyeing valuable ranking points, helping them qualify for next month's NZ Beach Volleyball Open at the ASB Tennis Centre in Auckland.

The competition runs 8.30am-6pm on Sunday.

Please note the single ride ticket for the railway is now $2 a time. This increase has been in force since November and is to help pay for the big addition of the two bridges recently completed. Thanks to all those who have taken time out to ride our new railway layout since its introduction.
