Inaction on registration unacceptable

Labour believes the Government is putting the most vulnerable members of our society at risk by not acting on the advice of officials to urgently make the registration of social workers mandatory, says Labour's spokesperson for Social Development, Carmel Sepuloni.

'The Government has had multiple opportunities to act on this matter, but has chosen to ignore officials. It has also rejected the advice of the sector to make registration mandatory which was a key recommendation in the White Paper on Vulnerable Children.

'With 349 CYFS social workers still unregistered and with clear advice from the Social Workers Registration Board that the current system is not working, one has to ask whether the Government is taking this issue seriously.

'Even more concerning is the Government's inability to provide assurances that all of the social workers delivering the Social Workers in Schools service – funded by MSD – are registered. In fact, I've had to write directly to the contracted providers delivering the service as neither the Ministry of Education nor MSD can give me a straight answer on this.

'That begs the question, how safe are our children?”

'Since the system of voluntary registration was introduced in 2003 there have been seventeen cases of reported misconduct of people who worked as social workers or community workers, sixteen of which were unregistered,” says Carmel Sepuloni.

'As the law stands anyone can call themselves a social worker. As far as I'm concerned, this is dangerous and unacceptable. The legislation needs to be urgently reviewed and Labour is committed to holding the Government to account on this matter.”

Something better be done real quick if these are the a-holes taking via the police and placed in CYF's hands when real parents are not for many many petty silly and sometimes gross behaviour cannot care for them in legalised proper manner. Lets not forget its easy for Police State & winz to take children when well knowing the very low income via benefits ensures parent cannot care for their children in proper manner as prescribed by law. Basically every single parent or low wages poor person with children in their care are in breach of these laws which NOW make poverty a crime. A fine for no warrant rego for car equal to ten years of mortgage payments for one on benefits. This police know and thus can manipulate any person on low income to comply for whatever reason legal or not under threat of having kids taken.

Try that when working two or three jobs a day and having to make sure one also has money to pay childcare and other associated travel costs etc. Try moving house two three times a year and changing schools when one can't afford bond or to keep car warranted or rego'ed to move. Dreams are free Carpendeum but no go in this country which is now a Winz, Ministry of Development IRD, Police, Courts Prison State for all beneficiaries and especially those with kids. Have You noticed how few kids go to each others neighborhood homes to play these days as they once did? This is direct outcome of anti-smacking law and others IMPOSED which also resulted in huge numbers of kids being take into CYF"s never to be returned to their distraught parents.CyF's pay others. This is ugly and despicable behaviour of the POLICE STATE called NZ.
