Show offers town and country fun

A 93-year-old tradition of town meets country takes place in Katikati tomorrow, when the A&P Show gates open 9am at Uretara Domain.

The show is a mix of modern attractions as well as traditional agricultural and pastoral events, such as home industries and cattle and horse competitions.

Equestrian competitions are among the show's most popular and this year children as young as four-and-a-half will participate.

Old country traditions such as milking a cow by hand will be on offer to show-goers tomorrow.

'The Katikati show is in very good heart and is so well supported by our local community,” says committee member Louellen Davies.

'We're very lucky because some A&P shows are struggling to survive.”

Equestrian competitions are among the show's most popular and this year children as young as four-and-a-half will participate in the lead reign competitions. There's competitions for Clydesdales and a special trophy for side saddle riders too.

'There's also a competition for junior side saddle riders.”

Mural Town Traders has donated a silver tray trophy for the Show Hunter event in conjunction with the Waihi A&P Show held in October.

The home industries competition for children to adults includes sections from home baking and preserving to hand crafts, fruit and vegetables to photography.

There's the chance to try your hand at milking a cow and farmers will be parading dairy and beef cattle before judges in efforts to win ribbons and maybe take best in show awards.

Plus, there'll be trade exhibits, food stalls, rides and amusements, live music, stilt walkers, and a chainsaw sculpture will be created by 1pm, then bids will be for it via silent auction.

'As always we'll have the bar under the big oak tree and lots more seating around the grounds this year.”

The Katikati A&P Show is on from 9am Sunday, February 1, at the Uretara Domain.

Admission costs $5 per adult and $2 per child, with under-fives entering for free.
