Northland Police and other emergency services are currently at the scene of a serious crash on State Highway One (SH1) approximately 17 kilometres South of Whangarei City.

The crash, near the intersections of Cotton Road and SH1, involves a truck and a car.

The driver of the car, an elderly male, is currently trapped in his vehicle, his condition is described as critical.

As a result of the crash SHI in the vicinity is closed to all traffic, it is estimated that this section of road could be closed for the next 1 hour (5.30pm) while emergency services tend to and remove the injured party and then clear crash debri.

Due to the crash vicinity there are no immediate diversion routes.

Motorists unfamilar with this region are asked to delay travel.
