Glitch behind IRD demands

Bay of Plenty residents may receive a nasty shock in the shape of a bill for outstanding income tax this week – but the message is 'don't panic” after an Inland Revenue glitch.

IRD officials have revealed they aware of 475 incorrect tax demands that have been sent out nationwide due to the malfunction, with 19 mailed to Bay of Plenty addresses.

Some 475 incorrect tax demands have been sent out by the IRD after a glitch in their system.

This comes in the form of a February 7 due date reminder letter with the incorrect amount of tax owed showing.

IRD group manager of collections David Udy says the glitch is being taken seriously and urges anyone who thinks they have been falsely billed to contact the IRD.

'We understand that such mistakes can be very upsetting, and we sincerely apologise to people who may be affected,” says David.

'We process six million transactions each year, and from time to time we do make mistakes.”

David says individual cases cannot be disclosed publically but IRD is taking the matter very seriously.

The IRD plan to review their systems and procedures to prevent a recurrence of the error.

"IRD officials have revealed they aware of 475 incorrect tax demands that have been sent out nationwide due to the malfunction, with 19 mailed to Bay of Plenty addresses"" - if IRD know who the 475 taxpayers are, THEY should be contacting the taxpayers concerned, NOT putting it on the taxpayers to contact IRD. Many elderly taxpayers will just pay up, thing that they owe IRD.

First you must decipher the gobbledeegook of a tax statement before deciding whether you owe or not. Thats enough to bake your little noodle for a start off, let alone pick up the phone....

Dear IRD, find my website, create a log-in, phone me to confirm and set up voice activation and then send me a secure mail message. I will then get back to you at my convenience within 15 working days. This is called progress and due to me listening to you, the customer. Regards, the taxpayer
