Trial for Ohauiti murder accused

The two men accused of murdering a man in Ohauiti last year will be defending the charges at a trial later this year after pleading not guilty this morning.

SunLive can now name the two men after name suppression lapsed today.


The murder accused sitting in the dock at the High Court in Tauranga.

Paul Taki, 37, and Hiakita Eruera, 36, are jointly charged with murdering Takena Tiepa-Ranapia on Sunday, November 30.

Takena's body was found outside a house in Mansfield Street.

A post-mortem revealed Takena was a victim of an assault prior to his death. Police are not commenting on the nature of his injuries as the investigation continues.

The accused are also charged with assault with a weapon using a wrench and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in relation to two other assault victims.

A third person, a 40-year-old woman, is jointly-charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault with a weapon. She is also charged with possession of methamphetamine.

She is due to appear in court tomorrow.

During the accused's last appearance, Takena's family made their feelings heard with his mother yelling 'you killed my son” and another person saying 'it's on now”.

Today in court, the scene was completely different as there were no family in the public gallery.

Taki and Eruera were remanded in custody until their trial on November 23.

A callover has been set for June 17 to go over any pre-trial issues.

Taki is due to appear in the High Court in Rotorua for a bail application on February 9.
