Williams cup cricket fireworks

The expected fireworks in the replay of last year's Williams Cup final between titleholders City Sports Bar, Te Puke and Eves Realty, Greerton, took place at the Te Puke Domain on Saturday, with the bowlers completely dominating proceedings.

Greerton were quickly ruing their decision to bat first after the Te Puke bowlers ripped through the Greerton top order.

At five down with just 45 runs on the board and with the vaunted Greerton batting attack back in the pavilion, the visitors to the Te Puke Domain were in deep trouble.

Some defiance from Greerton keeper Kent Hodder, who finished his turn at bat with the games top score of 21, was undone when Te Puke took three wickets at the 70 run mark.

The Te Puke bowlers went on to roll the current Baywide Cup titleholders for 77. Jeremy Bates roared back into action to finish with three wickets for 17 runs with Oliver Smithson and Brody Gilroy also grabbing three wickets.

Led by Bay of Plenty quick bowler Campbell Thomas, who grabbed four wickets at a cost of 17 runs, the Greerton bowling attack quickly had the Te Puke batsmen on the back foot.

The game ended in mid-afternoon, with the Te Puke scrambling home to victory with a solitary wicket to spare. Cam Neal and Dan Spencer were also right in the action both taking two wickets, in a game where 19 wickets fell for only 155 runs.

There were also fireworks at Blake Park in Mount Maunganui, where Carrus Mount Maunganui posted 312/3 against BOP Indians. Skipper Peter Drysdale who opened the innings, was still there at the end of his teams turn at bat with an unbeaten 91.

Mount keeper Tim Clarke smashed 20 fours on his way to 125, with Dan Hill belting a quick-fire 62. The Rotorua based Indian team made a spirited chase of the large target. At the end of their allotted overs they had posted a highly creditable 280/9, with Jayvant Dhanjee top scoring with 63 not out.

Central got their first Williams Cup points on the board, with a relatively easy win over Tauranga Boys College, in the Western Bay of Plenty. The game belonged to Central captain Jason Trembath, who top scored with 37 runs, in his side's total of 178 all out. The Rotorua team skipper then led the way with six wickets as Tauranga Boys' College were removed for just 63 to give Central a 115 run win.

Multiple Williams Cup title holders Element IMF Cadets joined Mount Maunganui and Te Puke at the top of the standings after a big win against Whakatane United in the Eastern Bay. Cadets smashed their way to 317 and then bowled the Eastern Bay side out for 126.

Individual highlights were Sean Davey (92) and Ben Christensen (82) with Joel Mathews taking four wickets for the home side. Brent Sharma top scored for Whakatane United with 30 runs with Donovan Deeble returning 4/28 for the visitors.
