A 22-year-old man is believed drowned in the Waikato River at Hamilton overnight.
Just before 9pm on Saturday, emergency services were called to the river, near Jellicoe Drive, Hamilton.
Police say it is understood the missing man and a friend were attempting to swim across the river when the man disappeared.
'His friend raised the alarm and Police and Fire service staff searched the river banks and used a boat with thermal imaging equipment to search the river as far as the Fairfield Bridge without success.”
The search was called off for the night at 11pm.
