Immunisation reminder for students

Along with preparing for student loans and life away from home, Bay of Plenty students heading off to university or other tertiary studies are being reminded to check their immunisations are up to date.

And the message from the professionals is it's never too late to catch up, with most immunisations free until you turn 18.

'There's lots to arrange - choosing courses, finding accommodation, sorting student loans, but don't forget to make sure you're up-to-date with your immunisations before you leave home,” says Medical Officer of Health Dr Jim Miller.

Jim says immunisation is the best protection against many serious, but preventable, diseases.

'Don't assume you're immune,” he adds. 'Check with your family doctor or nurse to make sure you are protected.”

Anyone that is 18 or older can still get immunised but there will most likely be a fee which will vary depending on the vaccine and the GP Practice.

'There are other immunisations which are not subsidised but are worth considering,' says Jim.

'For example, if you are planning to live in a hostel or shared accommodation, I recommend getting immunised against meningococcal disease.”

Universities across the country start semester one on March 2, with the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic beginning on February 16.
