UPDATED 3:30pm: The first three competitors to cross the finish line in today's Eve Surfbreaker Triathlon were all disqualified after gaining an illegal advantage on the bike leg.

The race front runners, Rotorua's Sam Osbourne and Taupo's Todd Cameron and Kyle Smith, were disqualified for drafting behind a van that had pulled out in front of them.

First place was subsequently claimed by 18-year-old Flynn Thompson who managed to hold off Auckland triathlete and NZ representative Cameron Brown, winning by a mere three seconds.

Drafting occurs when one cyclist rides behind another in an area of reduced air pressure which is created in the wake of that leading cyclist.

When this happens a cyclist uses less energy to maintain the same speed as the cyclist in front, creating an unfair advantage and is therefore an illegal practice in triathlons.
