The Tauranga-based TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called to the small town of Matarangi on December 25 at 10.30pm.

A rescue helicopter pilot says the woman was stabilised by St John paramedics before being flown to Thames Hospital for further treatment.

Due to the driving distance from the closest hospital and windy roads, the helicopter was tasked to fly the patient.

Ouch, I just stubbed my toe. Better get a free ride in the chopper. Dam-it, I just broke a fingernail. Call the heli!
