Lisa was only 39 when she died suddenly while on a family holiday back in 2008.

Her family commissioned the waka to symbolise her journey through life and Lisa's son, who was six-years-old at the time of his mother's death, is particularly devastated by the theft.

Police says it would have taken considerable effort to remove the waka from the headstone.

If you have any information that might help police recover this precious item for the Watson family, please contact Rotorua Police on: 07 348 0099.

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on: 0800 555111.
