Council mould claims another floor

The discovery of more mould at Tauranga City Council's headquarters has seen most of the second floor of the Willow Street building evacuated.

As a result, up to 70 staff are being relocated, says toxic mould outbreak project manager Terry Wynyard.

More council staff are moving into Baycourt today.

This is in addition to the 205 staff removed from the first floor and parts of the ground floor on December 15 when stachybotrys mould was uncovered.

The second floor mould is chrysosporium, says Terry.

'The fungi identified this tie around is a little bit different in that it is not as toxic as the original one,” he says.

'But it still has the potential to create health problems; skin irritation, eye irritation - that type of thing.

'So the scientists are recommending that the only way to deal with it properly is to remove all the floor coverings, wash down the floor area and walls, test and take air samples.

Staff from the top floor are being relocated, and there's room for another 25 at Baycourt. The remainder may be relocated to the ASB arena or asked to work from home.

'Basically what's going to happen is the entire second floor in the old administration building will have no staff working in it,” he adds.

The chrysosporium fungi is not airborne and doesn't affect the offices of the mayor, the chief executive officer or the staff café.

The council chambers, departments of governance, transportation and the councillors' lounge are also in the clear.

Removing the mould is expected to take three weeks to a month before staff can be temporarily brought back into the building.

'I say temporary because we still have got all the weather tightness issues to address,” says Terry.

Removing the mould is expected to take up to a month.

A huge overreaction???

We're not dealing with radioactive contamination here. What building doesn't have a bit of mould in it? What about people living in all those leaky homes? I think this trivialises people in countries where there are real health problems due to poor sanitation and building standards. Are we being soft soaped for a new council megalith building???? If there are real problems who will be held accountable? The builders, the inspectors? No, the ratepayers who pay up as always.

Well that was lucky then, cant have a bit of fungi in the beer fridge now can we. No café no beer fridge would mean that the entire building would have to be shut down and condemned. That would be the fatal blow to the whole thing.

Weather tightness?

So I guess what Terry is really saying is that the Mould thing is a hoax and cover up scam for the leaky building that is what is really happening behind the scenes here.

More money down the drain!

How can they be expected to run a city when they can't even run their own office properly. More money wasted and I'm presuming they have contracted cleaners who cost a fortune also.

Observant staff!!!!

So let me see, 205 staff moved in Early December and now another 75. How can none of these people not have seen any sign of this until now, after all, these are the very people who sign off on our houses to make sure they arn't leaky or mouldy!!!!!!!!!!

That of course about sums it up now doesn't it. I could say that they are working sooooo hard that they just are never there to look and see, but then that makes no sense as it is a complete contradiction to every known bureaucracy that ever existed ever! You rightly point out the wee problem of the concept that how can they check up on anyone else when there own corner is a complete shambles and some. Such is the life of an official ... creating a need to exist, but it is all meaningless as generally speaking it is complete hypocrite stuff.

Very true, so that will mean a raft of consultants will now be employed from all corners of the globe, at great cost and all added to rates. All the Muppets that existed before, retired, redundant or whatever ill all be dragged back into the place to "re-hibernate" in the nice cosy places ...

The only thing that the ravished ratepayers can now hope for is a swift and quick end to the mould attack on level two, the sooner that the mould completely takes over the sooner productivity will increase and ratepayers will be better off.

Like how many does one man need for one truck on the other side of the car park? there is not meant to be anyone in the building so why not just put 3-4 at the entrance. Hmmm I know why .... they are paid a cost + percentage basis right so costing more is the only way to justify anything more, costly, over the top and more.

The red dangly thing hanging out the window, that looks like it is there to just dump all and anything outside? Not quite sure that is a good look for something that is meant to be "harmful" some how. By the look of it the refuse from within will be just heaved out the window. If this was something like asbestos (like the Merivale community center purchase) then the entire building would have a plastic bag over it with ventilation systems and all that to.

Sick building syndrome.

Seems that Terry is saying that the building leaks rather badly, and it's time for the wrecking ball.

It's a Scam

Council refuses any photographs of the mould. Does it really exist?? It's a scam to get a new building!!

PITY THE NEW HOME OWNER

Posted on 24-12-2014 08:13 | By The Caveman

Get on with it, just knock the whole building down an spend $30 million to replace it.... Oh, I thought the Council was responsible for building standards !!! They take thousands in consent fees and other fees BUT it seems that they cannot get it right for their own building, what chance does the owner of new house have ??

Yes, so true, there is a lot to be very concerned about here on the level of management at TCC where they have become so slack in their own backyard.

But that does not replace the home and everything within it.
