Woman injured in head-on smash

A 60-year-old woman has suffered multiple injuries in a head-on crash on the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

The woman was airlifted by the BayTrust Rescue Helicopter to Rotorua Hospital in serious but stable condition yesterday afternoon.


Emergency services at the scene of the crash near Kutarere.

The crash happened on a remote stretch of road near Kutarere, Opotiki, about 6pm.

A rescue helicopter spokesperson says two cars were involved in the crash.

Police, fire and ambulance all attended the scene. A landing site was set up by Fire crews close to the accident site for the helicopter.

'Once medical attention had been provided by the St John Advanced Paramedic carried on board the helicopter the 60-year-old local woman was airlifted to Rotorua Hospital in a serious but stable condition with multiple injuries.

'The helicopter was used due to the distance involved for the patient to travel to hospital and the specialist care the helicopter was able to bring to the accident scene.”

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Anyone who saw anything is asked to report information to their nearest police station.
