Santa's little hip-hop helpers were kept very busy on Sunday delivering 96 presents to local children who would have gone without this Christmas.

The small mountain of presents were donated by music lovers and all-round good Samaritans as part of local hip hop group Urban Drama's Christmas Appeal Gig at Brewers Bar last Friday.

The gig was inspired by UD co-founder Franz-Oliver ‘FOL' Lindsay who decided this year that Christmas is not Christmas for children who wake up to no presents.

He and fellow UD co-founder Karaitiana ‘Krykey' Hohia-Thompson spent Sunday afternoon delivering presents to families and support workers whose clients who would now benefit from appeal gig.

'Bro, it's an awesome feeling and I'm just stoked that we managed to get 96 presents donated for those kids,” says Franz-Oliver.

'I was kind of expecting presents from the $2 store but some people went out bought some really cool stuff, some even showed up last Friday with 10 presents.”

Amongst the donated presents were BMX bikes, dolls, rugby and netball balls, boardgames plus much, much more.

Elaborating more on why he chose to organise the charity gig, Franz-Oliver says around the age of ten his family's home was robbed over Christmas time and were left absolutely nothing.

Word got out amongst the community about his family's plight, and was eventually picked up by one of the local radio stations.

'We went from having nothing to having our whole lounge covered in presents, it was amazing man, absolutely awesome.

'I really wanted to give that sort of feeling to those kids out there who were going to get nothing this Christmas, just wanted to give a little something back to the community.”

Joing Urban Drama on the stage last Friday were local acts TiZL, Pix Westpix West & RAS1, Swizl Jager, T Slash DUB, Phreaze & PYRO, House Of Gold, Arms Of Platinum, Psyko T, Massikar, Rhyzup, Gelow Jemz and Deep Trenchaz-Holacaust.

Franz-Oliver says the gig went perfectly, the guest artists were all on form and had a great crowd to perform in front of.

But what him impressed the most was the support they received from the community.

'There were a couple of local Facebook pages that posted about what we were doing and collected presents on our behalf which was cool.

'We'd also had a few people who didn't go to the gig, but they showed up before hand with all these presents just because they wanted to give the kids something to smile about on Christmas.

'I'm just absolutely stoked and really thankful to everyone who supported and helped us out with this appeal, this is a really good feeling,” says Franz-Oliver.
