Bay fourth in ND cricket tournament

Bay of Plenty Lakeland finished in fourth place in the ND Senior Secondary Cricket tournament, played in Gisborne this week.

After a disappointing championship semi-final performance, where they mustered just 67 runs in an eight wicket loss to Counties Manukau – they posted over 200 runs against Waikato Valley in the battle for third place.

Waikato Valley set the Bay side a huge challenge, when they reached 272/6 in their fifty overs.

The Lakeland batsmen made a valiant attempt for victory, but were bowled out for 213.

Tom Yarrall top scored with an unbeaten 43, with Rohan Gosai and Alastair Blackett providing good support in reaching the 30s.

Brad Munro and Liam Kelly both chipped in with scores in the twenties, in a vastly improved Lakeland batting performance.

Bay of Plenty Coastland had an outstanding day at the batting crease, on day one of their two-day match, against long-time rivals Northland in the playoff for fifth/sixth.

Batting first, the Bay side were in early strife losing their first for wickets for just 18 runs.

Enter Christian MacDonald and Harrison Perry, who knuckled down to put on a 135 run partnership.

Perry was the first to go with 50 runs to his name with MacDonald carrying on to top score for his side with 86.

Another big partnership of 113, from Louis Morris (76no) and Brody Gilroy (42) resulted in the Coastland declaring at 301/8. Northland was twenty without loss at stumps on day one.

Coastland toiled for most the day in the Gisborne sun, before taking first innings points, when they bowled Northland out for 267 in the 92nd over.

Kyle Dovey was the best of the Coastland bowling attack taking 3/31, with Tom Wakelin, Harrison Perry and Brody Gilroy removing two Waikato Valley batsmen apiece.

The Coastland side won the second four division, to finish in fifth place in the week long competition.

The two Bay teams, who finished on equal points in section one took different paths to the business end of the tournament, on the last two days.

BOP Lakeland sneaked into the championship playoffs courtesy of a better run rate than their Coastland counterparts.

BOP Coastland, who were relegated to the division two playoffs, paid the price of a sub-standard performance against Hamilton on day two when they were bowled out for a paltry 61 runs by the Hamilton bowlers.
