Update on missing tramper

Horowhenua Search and Rescue have found some promising signs in the search for missing tramper, David Schopf who was last seen in the Otaki Forks area on Wednesday.

Central District SAR coordinator, Sergeant Bill Nicholson says: "Our aerial search located a guitar and guitar bag that belong to David.

When ground teams searched the area they found remnants of a campfire and some food wrappers.

There was no sign of David's pack so at this stage we believe he has it on him."

"The campsite was located about three kilometres downstream of Waitewaewae Hut.

This is an encouraging sign and we now know where he has been which will greatly assist with our search.

Hopefully David has taken shelter and is keeping warm."

Three helicopters have been used today for the aerial search including a commercial helicopter, and a NZ Airforce Iroquois and NH90.

Thirty people including Police staff and LandSAR volunteers are currently involved in the search.

Weather dependant, one team assisted by a police search and rescue dog will continue to search the area around the campsite, and an NH90 helicopter will also conduct a aerial search to locate a light source this evening.

The current weather conditions in the Otaki Forks area are low cloud with light rain and a mild temperature.

"We have covered a substantial area of bush today but tomorrow morning we hope to airlift in four kayakers so they can search along the river for any potential signs of where David may be," says Sergeant Nicholson.

Police appeal for anyone that has been in contact or has seen David to contact the Central District Command Centre on (06) 351 2535.
