Naming new roads to Te Puke

From 2015, Western Bay residents will have the chance to put their thinking caps on and come up with names for the former stretch of State Highway 2 into Te Puke.

The road is set to become nameless when the Tauranga Eastern Link is complete.

Western Bay of plenty District Council is seeking suggestions for two new road names.

Next year's completion of the $445 million, five-year TEL project will see the stretch of road handed over to Western Bay of plenty District Council.

The New Zealand Transport Agency forecasts the TEL will be officially opened late next year.

The highway, from the railway bridge near Domain Road to the new roundabout at the SH33 intersection at Paengaroa, will become a local road mainly for traffic travelling to and from Te Puke.

Council has a list of proposed names and is asking for further suggestions from the public in the New Year.

Two new stretches of road will be renamed – from Domain Road to Te Puke Quarry Road (west side) and from No 1 Road to the intersection with SH33 at Paengaroa (east side).

Suggested names to date for the Western side of the existing SH2 are: McNaughton Road, Long Swamp Road, Packhouse Road, Whiteside Road, Jutland Road (relating to the battle involving Admiral John Jellicoe), Green Road and Gold Road.

Suggestions for the Eastern stretch are: Goodness Highway, Te Kapua Road (Captain of the Te Arawa canoe), Huanui Highway (translation – Highway) and Jutland Road.

The naming process will take place at the same time as the review of speed limits early next year and the public will be asked to submit more name options.

Council's Regulatory Hearings Committee will consider all name suggestions and make the final decision.

The Speed Limit Review will be considered by Council's Operations Committee.

What do you think the two roads should be named?

I think the road should be called Weld Way in recognition of our past Mayor and the years he spent campaigning for new and safer roads in Te Puke and the Bay of Plenty.

Best name ....

Zheng He Road, this being in recognition of how Maori arrived in New Plymouth when they were randomly dropped off here by mistake about 1380 AD. This was well after many others had already been to and lived in NZ and still do.

How about Te Puke Direct. A comment on the roundabout at the Paengaroa end of the TEL bypass. On entering this roundabout drivers encounter sudden very tight entry from all sides. I feel the layout into the roundabout is not well engineered and deserves an overview by the designers .Overall the whole project is a credit to the designers and builders with only this roundabout being an exception.
