Strong to gale northeasterlies precede this front, bringing a period of heavy rain to many northern areas.

The heaviest falls are expected in the Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty areas, where 80 to 120mm could accumulate in a 15 to 18 hour period.

People are advised that streams and rivers are likely to rise rapidly, and heavy rain could cause surface flooding, slips and make driving hazardous.

On the Coromandel Peninsula rain is expected to become heavy early Wednesday morning, then ease early Wednesday evening.

In the 15 hours from 3am to 6pm on Wednesday, expect 80 to 110mm to accumulate, especially about the ranges. Peak intensities of around 25mm per hour are possible with thunderstorms.

While in the Bay of Plenty Rain is expected to become heavy Wednesday morning, then ease in the evening.

In the 18 hours from 5am to 11pm Wednesday, expect 90 to 120mm to accumulate, especially about the ranges. Peak intensities of around 25mm per hour are possible with thunderstorms.
