Kaimai delays, Karapiro fatal

Two crashes on the Kaimai Ranges are creating traffic delays and diversions are in place in the Waikato after a fatal four vehicle collision at Karapiro.

Waikato and Bay of Plenty Police are in attendance at two vehicle collisions on State Highway 29, over the Kaimai Ranges.

The weather in the area is not good and Police remind motorists to drive to the conditions.

While traffic is flowing, motorists should expect delays if travelling that route.

One person has died and several others are badly injured following a crash on Tirau Road (SH1) near Karapiro this afternoon. The crash happened at about 4:30 pm.and involved 4 vehicles including a truck One person died at the scene.

A child has critical head and abdominal injuries. At least three others have moderate to serious injuries. State Highway one is closed at the scene to allow the Westpac Helicopter to land. Traffic diversions are in place as follows: Southbound traffic - diverted via Karapiro Road, Taoataoroa Road and SH29 at Pairere. Northbound traffic is diverted to SH27 from Pairere at the SH29 SH1 intersection. It is expected that there will be long delays and drivers should make alternative arrangements if possible. Traffic should not use Hydro Road, which has weight and length restrictions where it crosses the Karapiro Dam.
