SH2 crash: patients stable

Update 9.52AM: The six people injured in a two-car crash on State Highway 2, near Athenree, yesterday are in stable conditions in hospital and two have been discharged.

A father and son have been released from Tauranga Hospital and a teenager and her mother are recovering in Auckland Hospital, while a husband and wife are in stable conditions at Waikato Hospital.

The Tauranga-based TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called to the incident at Athenree Gorge at the turnoff to Waihi Beach about 2.30pm on Saturday.

Six people were injured in the crash, including a husband and wife in one car and four people in the other car.

TECT Rescue Helicopter pilot Todd Dunham says a 16-year-old and her mother were flown to Auckland Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, while the Trustpower TECT Rescue helicopter flew a 70-year-old woman to Waikato Hospital with neck and chest injuries.

Todd says the 70-year-old's husband was driven by St John Ambulance to Waikato Hospital, while two others were driven to Tauranga Hospital.

Todd says the helicopter was called to the scene due to the injuries and distance from Auckland and Hamilton hospitals.

An Auckland District Health Board media communication spokeswoman confirms the 16-year-old and her mother are in a stable condition at the hospital.

Bay of Plenty District Health Board communications manager Diana Marriot says a 43-year-old Auckland man and his 13-year-old son were treated and discharged from Tauranga Hospital about 7.30pm on Saturday.

Waikato District Health Board communications director Mary Anne Gill says a 70-year-old woman is in a serious but stable in the High Dependency Unit at Waikato Hospital. The woman's 72-year-old husband is stable in a ward.

St John Hauraki/Coromandel district operations manager Bruce MacDonald says five Ambulances, two helicopters and a manager were sent to the scene.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru says three people had to be cut from the wreckage of the vehicles.
