Man's body recovered after drowning

The Police National Dive Squad, with assistance of the Tauranga USAR volunteer team, have recovered the body of a man who drowned at McLaren Falls yesterday.

A body has been recovered at McLaren Falls Park.

Police have confirmed he is a 25-year-old Pakistan man who resided in Auckland.

Emergency services were called to the river in the Lower Kaimai area about 3.30pm on Saturday after reports of a person drowning after getting into difficulties in the water.

Police say the man was with two friends and decided to go for a swim in the swimming hole under the bridge.

'He was not a confident swimmer and entered the water on his own while his friends watched from the bridge above.

'He got into difficulties and his friends were not able to get assistance to him in time.”

The matter has now been referred to the Coroner.

Sergeant Craig Madden of Police Search and Rescue says this is a warning to all residents.

'Drowning can occur in minutes, if you intend to go swimming anywhere remember the four simple rules.”

The four rules are:

Be prepared

Learn to swim and survive and set rules for safe play in the water. Always use safe and correct equipment. Know the weather and water conditions before you get in

Watch out for yourself and others

Always pay close attention to children you are supervising in or near water. Swim with others and in areas where lifeguards are present.

Be aware of the dangers

Enter shallow and unknown water feet first and obey all safety signs and warning flags. Do not enter the water after drinking alcohol.

Know your limits

Challenge yourself within your physical limits and experience. Learn safe ways of rescuing others without putting yourself in danger.
