Focus on slowing down drivers

From Sunday, new roadside billboards, radio and online advertising will appear to inform drivers that police are committed to stopping speeders, this summer and beyond.

The road safety campaign is backed strongly by ACC, NZ Transport Agency and the Ministry of Transport.

Police are asking people to reduce their speed this summer.

ACC Manager of Motorist Injury Insurance Paul Gimblett says: 'ACC is supporting police with an advertising campaign calling on Kiwis not to speed.

'This is a sound investment, because we know slowing down takes a significant amount of the energy out of crashes forces.

'The faster you go, the worse your injuries will be.”

In 2012/13, ACC received around 85 road injury claims a day over the summer - that's 85 families impacted and a total of 7500 people hurt on our roads.

'That's why we're urging all Kiwis to stick to a safe speed and drive to the conditions,” adds Paul.

New Zealand Police commissioner Mike Bush says: 'As with last summer, police staff will consider safety, prevention and public trust and confidence in their decision-making.

'Speed cameras will still be set to record offences of more than 4km/h above the designated limit during the summer period.

'Police's messaging to the public on speed and tolerance was to encourage an attitude change.

'We don't want drivers to build in the tolerance when deciding on what speed to drive at, but to consider the designated speed limit as the maximum speed to drive at safely.

'Other people make mistakes on the road.

'Your speed could be the difference between a close shave or a loss of life.”

asking drivers to slow down is like telling kids not to eat icecream. more fines and harsher penalties . also so many bill boards.supposed to be concentrating on driving NOT reading signs on the side of the road....... more distractions.

does any1 know what the other 1 is saying......

Interesting this campaign is being supported by the three Gov agencies which have all had legislation tweaks designed to fill UK/SERCO Privately run Prisons of which ACC courtesy of Judith Collins and Simon Powers owns 25% stake. Add all the Poms and Boks involved in the NZ Transport Agency and Police State Ministry of Transport and we have one big Public rort going on seeking at every opportunity to impose financial penalties upon our Kiwi Peoples. These fines do not hurt the rich who take it in their stride but those who are at the bottom of the income list, the low paid and those on benefits. A small fine to them is often an eat or don't eat decision and can cause great harm in many other ways not apparent to the fines gathering armed soldiers of the called Police State, for that is what they today.

All Very Well

But had there been any policing of the speed limit over the last 10 days, the coffers would be full to overflowing.

What you are insinuating is that the unthinking vehicle has complete control over the operator behind the steering wheel and has no control over the speed that the vehicle is travelling. Sorry, I don't buy that. Commit the crime, pay the fine/time. There is no excuse for breaking the law.

What do all these 'Clowns' have a problem with?.. Break any law and face the consequences. i.e. Stick to the rules and no fines...Simple, fines are optional. You cannot call any rule breaking "Revenue Gathering" You decide!!

Billboards all over the place, it will be like scrolling on a laptop and missing the one point. More powerful cars and bigger truck ( SUV) with some speedo behind the wheel. From 50 kms to 110 kms of course we'll will have carnage on the roads. And educating us drivers well... as one writer says like asking a child not to lick the ice cream in his hand. Harsher penalties and no license for a year or two and to do defensive driving course when the time is up.

Looney tunes

Who are these brainiacs that come up with all these stupid ideas? Just down the road from where I live they've put a sign on SH2 telling us to focus on the road. So you have to take your eyes off the road to read the sign then re-focus on the road. I'll bet at no time did the over-paid clown who came up with this actually realize the double- standard.
