Underpass consortium announced

The NZ Transport Agency is awarding the Maungatapu underpass project to a consortium of Fulton Hogan, Tonkin Taylor and Waikato company Bloxham Burnett and Olliver.

Details of the $55 million contract are expected to be announced in the near future, says NZ Transport Agency's Bay of Plenty highways manager Niclas Johansson.

The new Baden Powell centre to be built at Ila Park in Ohauiti.

The consortium is expected to confirm the design and begin work on the preliminary erosion and sediment earthworks to prepare the site in January.

The main works to build the underpass will start in July and will take approximately three years to complete.

The underpass will deliver a two-lane link underneath the Maungatapu roundabout which will connect directly to Welcome Bay Road.

In addition to improving congestion at peak times, the underpass will make travel safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists by taking out the climb up the Welcome Bay and Hairini sides of the ridge.

Construction of the replacement Scouts and Guides' Baden Powell Centre is to start before Christmas and is expected to be complete by local firm Marra Construction by July next year.

The existing centre beside Welcome Bay Road occupies the path of the new Welcome Bay Road alignment. The centre is to be relocated to Harrisfield Drive, backing onto Ila Park.

The new centre is a ‘like-for-like' build that will include the same amenities at the original, including a kitchen, toilets and storage for the Scouts and Girl Guides equipment and the tables and chairs.

The cost of designing and building the new Baden Powell Centre will be approximately $750,000.

'We investigated relocating the current hall but the cost to do so was around $730,000 and would have created significant disruption to the hall users, so we opted for a rebuild,” says Niclas.

But what about the widening of Turret Road and 15th Avenue? That now is TCC's buy off cost for offloading the Route K melon to NZTA. The responsibility falls on TCC, so when is that a gunna be done?

It's great to see that things are on the move,BUT how does a hall being built from scratch cost $750000 what on earth is it made of.

Come on is it really that bad in this area? so in the peak hour how long do you have to wait? 5 minutes extra..really? i would rather see money spent on so much more than a road that will be a car park in the peak...lol

TCC staff, NZTA staff and a raft of consultants feeding off it and every little detail, it is called job self creation. Part of justifying ones own existence for no apparent reason but at everyone else's expense.

Yes it is bad, in fact it is a lot worse than you think. The money spent is completely ridiculous from start to finish in these out fits, the only benefits here is to the contractors, they do almost as good as the consultants who really know how to get the bills in on these jobs.
