Williamson to captain Blackcaps

Tauranga cricketer Kane Williamson is being handed the chance to add to his Blackcaps international captaincy resumé with regular skipper Brendon McCullum rested for the upcoming limited overs series.

The 24-year-old top order batsman will skipper the side for the Twenty20 and One Day International legs of the current United Arab Emirates tour.

Kane Williamson will captain the Blackcaps against Pakistan in two T20s and five ODIs.

He receives the chance as McCullum, along with Tim Southee and Trent Boult, returns to New Zealand to prepare for the upcoming home campaign against Sri Lanka.

New Zealand claimed a remarkable third test victory by an innings and 80 runs in Sharjah on Sunday to tie the three-test series 1-1.

In the third test, Williamson teamed up with McCullum for a record breaking second-wicket partnership of 297 in 52.5 overs – Williamson with 192 and McCullum 202.

They now head into two Twenty20s and five one-day international matches against Pakistan aimed at building their World Cup preparations.

Williamson has captained the Blackcaps in three ODIs and two T20s – the most recent the second T20 against the West Indies in July.

He also captained the NZ Under-19 team for the 2008 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia where the side lost by three wickets to India in the semi-finals.

Other tweaks to the squad sees the return of the previously injured Ross Taylor and the addition of fast bowler Adam Milne and batting all-rounder Anton Devcich.

GM National Selection Bruce Edgar says the decision to give McCullum, Southee and Boult extra time at home was based on the trio's recent workloads and the fact that the first ANZ Test will start less than a week after their return from the Middle East.

'Managing players' workloads will be an important part of our summer's plans and this is simply an example of that,” he says.

'On the flipside, it gives us a chance to assess and evaluate other players in contention for the Cricket World Cup squad, and allows us to work on some of our contingency plans – such as developing Kane's captaincy experience.”

The Blackcaps first test match against Sri Lanka is on December 26 at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.

The two sides will square off in two test matches followed by a series of ODIs leading up to the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup hosted by Australia and NZ.
