Dragon Boats ahoy!

Dragon Boating teams are battling it out at The Lakes to see who has what it takes to be the top team.

Bay of Plenty Dragon Boat Club president Colleen Harris says they have 27 corporate teams with 14 people in each team.

'There are three teams from the hospital with about 40 people and three breast cancer teams – two from Auckland and one from Tauranga.”

Colleen says today is about introducing corporate teams to Dragon Boating and having some fun times on the water.

'We always have really great response from all around the district. The teams have three or four races throughout the day and the top 16 go through to the final.

'We've already had out breast cancer final followed by a flower ceremony and music remembering those who didn't survive their battle.”

The Bay of Plenty team was lucky enough to win the race again this year.

The event has been going for about eight years.

The races are 240m, normally it would be a 500m race but Colleen says some of the paddlers have not trained and are not in peak condition to compete at that level.

The purpose of the regatta is to promote the sport and help grow club membership.
