High speed warning from police

Waikato Police are warning motorists that the place for speed is the racetrack not the road after a teenage driver was stopped driving at nearly twice the speed limit on a quiet suburban street today.

District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Freda Grace, says it was an infringement notice rather than a chequered flag one of her staff waved at driver clocked travelling at 96km/h on Alconbury Dr about midday.

"The 18-year-old driver told the officer from our Hamilton Road Safety Team that he couldn't explain why he was travelling so fast on a residential street that had a speed limit of 50km/h.

"Explaining that he was "normally good" the man said he had only been on his restricted driver's licence for a month. That licence has now been suspended and the man was also issued an infringement notice with a fine of about $600, hopefully these sanctions will prove a deterrent to both him and other potential speeders."

Mrs Grace says the driver lived and worked only a short distance from where he was stopped.

"The appropriate place for speeds of this nature is the racetrack, not the road. This summer Police and partner agencies are all working to ensure everyone can reach the beach safely, for this driver it may be a case of a bus being the safest option."
