Tupe misses Sevens cut

A week under the searing sun and the watchful eye of Sir Gordon Tietjens wasn't enough for Bay of Plenty newcomer Joe Tupe, who has missed out on a place in the All Blacks Sevens side.

All Blacks Sevens coach Tietjens has named his team to play the next two tournaments of the HSBC Sevens World Series in Dubai and South Africa after a week-long camp in Mount Maunganui, but there's no place for Tupe.

The squad, however, features two new caps in Murphy Taramai and Sam Vaka - something Sir Titch is excited about.

Wellington loose forward Taramai, 22, came to Sir Titch's attention during a recent Sydney Sevens tournament, while Counties Manukau centre Vaka, 22, also grasped his opportunity this week.

'They are both very enthusiastic young men who have really grown as Sevens players in the last few weeks,” says Tietjens. 'They certainly stepped up when it mattered.

'They are both very skilful and understand the game really well for two players who are still young.”

The pair's inclusion means there is no place for Tupe and Matt Clutterbuck, who have both been under the tutelage of Sir Titch in recent months. Just last week Tupe was contracted for the 2014/15 IRB HSBC Sevens World Series – one of six new faces.

After the gruelling camp, including Sir Titch's notorious fitness sessions and two matches against the Bay, the region is once again represented by Sevens 2014 IRB Sevens Dream Team member Scott Curry.

The 26-year-old has been a key player for the team since debuting in 2010 in Dubai with his strength and pace.

In Dubai the All Blacks Sevens are up against Scotland in their first pool game, followed by Japan and Samoa.

The team currently sits fifth in the World Series after the first tournament in October on the Gold Coast. Fiji sits atop the standings followed by Samoa, England and South Africa.

'Gold Coast was disappointing and we haven't done particularly well in Dubai over the last couple of years. But I have a good feeling after naming the side,” says Sir Titch.

'The hunger I saw out there was really noticeable and if we can start off in that first game and gather a lot of confidence we will have a good one.”

The team departs for Dubai on Sunday evening.
