Just deserving

When your partner comes to the door asking you to 'bear with me”, you don't expect him to rattle off a plan to start a Facebook page to help people.

But that's exactly what Keri Jury's partner Calvin did recently. Turns out, Keri was thinking the exact same thing.

The couple have started the Just Deserving Tauranga Facebook page with the aim of collecting donations of clothes, toys, homewares and food which they can distribute to families in need in the lead-up to Christmas.

Photographs will be taken of donated items and posted onto the Facebook page. The items will then be passed on to members of the community.

Calvin, Keri and their two boys, aged four years and eight months, are like many other families. Both working full-time, they haven't been without their own challenges.

As result the couple say they'd like to help others who may be struggling or going through tough times but don't always ask for it.

'Sometimes it can be the smallest gestures that can make the biggest difference,” says Keri.

But they've found it quite difficult getting started.

'Firstly there's the challenge of people trusting you; that you don't just want free stuff,” she adds.

'The other side is, once you've got the items, how do you know you're giving them to the right families?

'And, of course, some people don't like charity; so it's hard to get going.”

The original idea was to help families at Christmas by offering them a good meal and gifts for children less fortunate 'so they don't miss out”.

But the Tauranga City couple are not letting these hurdles stop them – which is why they've talked to The Weekend Sun about their efforts.

Calvin wants to help people who deserve to be helped – that don't usually ask for help – and there's always someone in need.

He says: 'Just little things, like a couple of loaves of bread or Weetbix can help. We only spent about $30 helping one lady, but she needed it more than we needed takeaways.

'But we don't accept cash; we prefer donations of goods like non-perishable foods and items.”

Keri says the lead-up to Christmas is especially hard for those struggling to make ends meet.

'That's why I think having a nice family meal would go a long way to easing some of that pressure,” she says.

Calvin says if people know someone who needs help, to private message the Facebook page confidentially.

'We'll look to give supplies to people around Christmas or earlier if we can.”

The couple is encouraging people to go on the Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/justdeserving and see what they could donate.
