The woman was clipped by the truck as it headed towards Tauranga on SH2, between Jocelyn Street and Fairview Road, at about 12.40pm on Monday.

She was found underneath the truck's trailer, with Katikati Volunteer firefighters and St John paramedics attending to her before she was transported to Tauranga Hospital.

Katikati Volunteer Firefighter Brendan Gibbs told SunLive at the time the truck ran over her legs, leaving her with leg and head injuries.

It is understood she had reached the pedestrian refuge in the middle of the road and attempted to cross the other lane when she was struck by the car transporter.

Diversions were in place at Jocelyn Street and Fairview Road for about three hours around the accident site.

Police would like to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the crash and who have not yet been spoken to by police. Witnesses can phone Senior Constable Hills at Tauranga Police Station on: 5774300.
