Warning after tunnel prank

A group of Tauranga teenagers have received a stern warning after their stormwater tunnel hijinks prompted a sizeable search and rescue effort.

Tauranga Fire Brigade and Police were called to the intersection of Pillans Road and Maxwells Road at about 7.30pm last night after reports of people yelling for help in the tunnels.

The Fire Brigade and Police responded to cries for help from stormwater tunnels last night.

Tauranga Fire Brigade senior station officer Mark Keller says the emergency services had appliances at a number of tunnel outlets in case a rescue operation was needed – but initial thoughts were it was a prank.

Mark says: 'Some young guys went up a stormwater tunnel and were hijinksing about calling out ‘help'.

'There was quite a bit of response because we were responding to people trapped in a tunnel, but they weren't.”

He says a strong warning was issued once the teens were located by police and escorted out of the tunnel.

Tauranga Police couldn't comment on the incident.
