What’s On – Beach 5s and Garden Fest

Good morning sunners – don't let a few specks of rain and some grey clouds scare you away from all the neat things happening in the Bay today.

Mount Maunganui's Main Beach is set for a popular dose of summer sporting action, as teams ditch their rugby boots and mouth guards for the fast-paced sport of beach rugby.

Beach 5s, as the name suggests, is teams of five playing a modified form of rugby with five minutes each way in lung-busting efforts on the sand – described in global circles as 'scrag on the beach”.

New Zealand Beach 5s organiser Melita Martorana says the inaugural day-long tournament sees teams constantly on the 30m by 25m field for non-stop games between 10am and 4pm.

'Pretty much what we want is for guys to get together and have a day of fun under the sun playing rugby.”

The NZ Garden & Art Festival Garden Trail is on today and tomorrow, with all gardens open from 9.30am both days, and passes still available from local outlets. For more information, click here.

The festival's Sculpture Symposium is in action too on Tauranga's The Strand waterfront, with 16 sculptors from all over New Zealand working frantically to meet today's deadline for completion of their Festival Symposium pieces. The Burley Attwood Law Sculpture Symposium auction is on-site today from 11am.

The festival's Lakes Expo Pavilion is also open to people this weekend. The fabulous festival hub is the focus of the event with a 50 metre stretch tent staging most NZ Garden & Art Festival events including speakers and workshops, with lots of on offer. To learn more, click here.

Exhibitors and visitors will be able to mix and mingle at the Pavilion Café too.

Plus, St Enoch's is having a Massive Church Fair today from 8am to fundraise money needed to finish off renovating their Sunday School room.

There will be an auction, which starts 9am, with viewing of items from 8am thanks to community support seeing more than two house-lots of furniture donated.

There will be plants, books, food, white elephant and entertainment for the children. Go and check it out at 134 16th Ave.
