Strand sculptures taking shape

Sixteen sculptors from all over New Zealand are working frantically on Tauranga's Strand waterfront to meet Saturday's deadline for completion of their Garden & Art Festival Symposium pieces.

The Burley Attwood Law Sculpture Symposium auction is on site on Saturday morning from 11 am.

Most of the sculptors are getting to ‘finishing touches' stage, but the site remains a hive of activity.

The carvers, as they like to be called, are working on the very hard Taranaki andresite which needs serious power tools, the slightly easier to shape Oamaru stone, or timber.

The works will be auctioned by local auctioneer, Frank Vosper, on Saturday.

If it is like the last festival symposium auction there will be a large crowd, spirited bidding and purchases for private gardens and for corporate and public displays.

There's also the chance of a few impulse buys by spectators who thought they had just come to watch!
