Morning motorcycle crash

A 44-year-old motorcyclist who crashed his unregistered and unwarranted Aprilia motorcycle into the rear of a car on SH2 east of Cambridge Road, was also unlicensed, say police.

The accident happened on Tamatea Arikinui Drive under the route K overbridge at about 11.30am this morning.

The scene after the crashon on SH2 east of Cambridge Road.

Acting traffic senior sergeant Mike Owen says shortly before the collision, the Tauranga rider was speeding and involved in a series of passing incidents, overtaking and undertaking.

Reports suggest he didn't see the car in front slow down and ran into the back of it.

'He was walking at the scene, checked out by ambulance and taken to Tauranga hospital for observation,” says Mike.

There will be charges, but police have still to speak with witnesses, many of whom left their contact details before continuing their journey.

As well as the lack of warrant and registration, the Aprilia RSV Mille, a 998cc V twin, had numerous other defects says Mike.

'And he wasn't appropriately licenced for that vehicle either,” he adds.

Speed ?

So yet another idiot breaking every rule in the book will have his "accident" recorded as caused by speed. This will justify the rest of us being harassed for minor speeding infringements; all in the name of safety. And all along the irresponsible behaviour is rarely checked, until there is carnage. Let us have some proactive steps towards safety and remove the worst 10% of drivers and the worst 10% of vehicles from the roads. That will yield a much better safety result than trying to reduce speeds by 10km/h.

Speed right

Yo - mutley & hapukafin - you are totally right - coppers will use this accident as "speed" when the truth is that the "rider" should not have been on the road. He/she should get a 5 year driving (sorry riding) ban. Speed had nothing to do with it - unlicensed rider was the problem .............

And...

...despite everything that this guy did wrong, there will still be those motorbike riders who will once again bleat and blame the crash on the car driver. Some people need to face reality, stop being in denial and accept that there are some real idiot motorbike riders out there.

they don't care

A lot of good the graduated motorcycle licensing system did here, eh? There's bound to be plenty of other people that aren't riding/driving with a license and just never get caught.
