Tauranga's Mosaic Music are celebrating after taking home the Best Gospel Christian Album award at last night's 2014 NZ Vodafone Music Awards.

Within 24 hours of its release in April, Mosaic's album ‘You Surround' went straight to number one on the NZ iTunes worship chart and third in the Top 40 charts for all genres.

Mosaic is a Mount Maunganui and Whakatane church with a huge creative music community made up of around 40 musicians and singers.

The musicians who played on the album are Kelly Hayward, Josh Turner, Jared Harper, Logan Skerrett, Linden Cunninghame, Alice Cunninghame, Hannah Wanhill, Georgia Lines, Kelly MacNamara and Simon Hayward.

When it was announced Mount Mosaic had won the category the whole band was buzzing, says Simon.

'We're really stoked,” he says. 'It was an amazing night with a great group of friends and it was just a real privilege to be there and take part in a great night.

'They gave us a table down at the front and we felt very much part of the action. The whole atmosphere was so electric.”

He adds that some of the performances on the night, especially brother and sister act Broods, were 'spine-tinglingly amazing”.

Mosaic's Facebook page blew up when news of the band's win broke and Simon says the power of social media allowed them to share their moment with fans here in the Bay and around the country.

So did they celebrate their big win in style?

'It's funny, when you've got little kids you're like ‘epic, I get to sleep in tomorrow!' so if you call that celebrating in style, I don't know,” he jokes.

‘You Surround' is a compilation of songs written by various members of the band and captures the journey of the church's community during the last couple of years.

Speaking to SunLive ahead of the awards earlier this week, Simon said simply winning the category would be the cherry on the cake.

Well, here's hoping that cake is sturdy enough to support a Tui Award.
