Multiple calls to the SunLive news hotline report the fire is producing toxic smelling smoke and the highway is closed from Te Maunga to Domain Road.

Some reports have mentioned the fire may involve polystyrene but this yet to be confirmed.

A cyclist in the Papamoa vicinity says he was turned back as police closed the highway and surrounding areas. Thick smoke was pouring from the incident.

Another contact says the fire source is polystyrene from within the bridge structure and the "whole sky was black."

Police were advising residents to stay inside and close doors and windows.

I passed this blaze, and watched it shooting out and around the concrete wall from inside the structure. My guess is it was the giant polystyrene supports within thats billowing thick cloud of black poison into the sky.

That will be the stuff they are using to help build the bridge. Someone must a been hiding in there and having a smoke? Smoking is hazardous to life.

Polystyrene emits extremely toxic smoke when it burns. Wonder how many people in Papamoa will have had their life shortened due to this?
