Race for vital playoff spots

The competition is beginning to heat up with first rounds of the Western Bay Reserve and B Grade competitions getting to the business end of the season.

With two rounds to go both competitions will then split into top and bottom four to contest the playoffs.

Mount Maunganui has all but grabbed a top-four home semi-final, leading the standings in Reserve Grade title chase.

On Saturday they face R&A Sangha, who sit in fifth place on the leader board and must win to keep their top four aspirations alive.

The big improver on the points table this month has been newcomers Sikh Sports with two successive victories taking them into second place.

On the weekend Tauranga Boys College stand in the way of the Sikh Sports XI further advancing up the standings, with the Tauranga students also in good form in fourth place.

Multiple Reserve Grade titleholders Cadets sit just off the pace in third, but will need to beat Katikati at home to continue their momentum, while Greerton and Te Puke could have a good tussle at Pemberton Park.

Grasshoppers and Cadets, lead the way in the B Grade competition, with both taking unbeaten records into the weekends play.

Grasshoppers could face a strong challenge from former titleholders Katikati when they meet at Ferguson Park. Cadets will also need to play well if they wish to beat current B Grade champions Wanderers at the Tauranga Domain.

The winner of the clash between Mount Maunganui and Greerton at Blake Park, will bank their first win points of the season, while the Te Puke based Singh XI are likely to pose a big ask for Albion.
