Train de-rails, blocks Sulphur Pt

UPDATE 10.20: Some traffic is now leaving Sulphur Point after road access was blocked earlier this evening when a train de-railed.

Emergency services have cleared traffic to depart Sulphur Point at Cross Road but traffic is restricted into the peninsula. A SunLive reporter at the scene says the rail tracks are ripped up and the road surface is damaged.

It appeared several rail wagons were overturned and there may be more further down the track. Several containers were strewn in the vicinity.

There are no reports of injury at this stage. A crane is expected on the scene tonight to help with the wreckage.

UPDATE 9.20pm: A train has de-railed at Cross Road, Tauranga, cutting all access to Sulphur Point.

Containers are reported to be strewn on the road and the only access to the peninsula could be cut off for hours.

A caller to SunLive at the scene said he was leaving a wedding at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club but had to turn back and return to the reception, after finding all access blocked at the Cross Road level crossing. Traffic was banked up either side of the rail line.

He said a train had left the tracks and containers were lying on their sides on the road and surrounding area. Police and fire officers were assessing the likely hazards and awaiting consignment notes on the rail goods, to ascertain the level of hazards contained in the wreckage.

A 40 ft and a 20 ft container appeared to be lying on their side and wreckage from the crash had come close to smashing into nearby buildings.

The road was also "ripped up" in places. Police had told motorists it could take a couple of hours to ascertain the hazards and clean up.

All access was blocked including pedestrians.
