St Mary's lift World Cup

St Mary's School capped off an unbeaten day at the crease by winning the Western Bay of Plenty Mini World Cup for a sixth time.

Held at Mount Maunganui's Bay Oval, the 11th annual event saw 16 Western Bay Year five and six primary school teams compete for schooling and international dominance.

St Mary's (aka England) and Tauranga Primary (aka South Africa) reached the title decider as the only two unbeaten sides after three rounds of preliminary play, with Greenpark and Papamoa squaring off for the bronze medal position.

Points were awarded for runs scored and wickets taken, with Tauranga Primary batting first to finish the match with 84 points.

St Mary's went into bat with plenty of enthusiasm, finishing their 16 overs at the crease with 112 points, to annex the 2014 Western Bay Mini World Cup trophy.

The school has previously won the tournament in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Initiated by Bay of Plenty Cricket in 2004 to introduce the two year groups to the enjoyment of the game, the competition has an international flavour, with all teams representing a cricket-playing nation.

An extra bonus for the teams was the arrival of the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup during its day-long visit to the city.

'It was fantastic,” says BOP Cricket development manager Tai Bridgman-Raison.

'It just worked in really well, and the fact that it was in town this particular day and that they could get it down here was great for the kids 'They [the players] thought it was pretty cool it coming along, but once they saw it in the flesh they were pretty impressed.”

With forecasts of thunderstorms and hail throughout the day, organisers were lucky enough to get through all four rounds of play to find an eventual winner, says Tai.

And he continues to marvel at the level of skill on show each year, including a growing number of girls taking part.

'It impresses me every year the amount of talent and skill level at such a young age,” he adds.

'Also amongst the females, there are a number of girls involved in regular cricket and that stands out.”

The battle for third place was taken by Greenpark School (aka Pakistan), who posted a solid 138 points with Papamoa School (aka Afghanistan) tallying 104 points.

While there was some outstanding batting and bowing during the day, a bowling hat-trick by Ronak Mani from the Greenpark two team stood out in the Mini World Cup performances.

The sportsmanship award was given to Gate Pa School with the best uniform on the day going to Pillans Point School.
