Protesting against TPPA

Residents have gathered in Red Square this afternoon to voice their concerns about Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

Trade ministers from the twelve participating countries, including New Zealand, will be meeting at the same time in Beijing to try to bring the secretive negotiations to a close after more than four years.

People are showing their opposition to TPPA.

Tauranga's rally joins 17 towns and cities in taking a stand against TPPA.

'There has been a massive response to the call for Kiwis to fight back against a deal that puts the interests of big corporations ahead of ordinary people,” says Its Our Future spokesperson Edward Miller.

'Thousands have signed up to attend on Facebook, and if even half of those join us it would make it much bigger than the day of action held on 29 March this year.”

President of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions Helen Kelly says: 'We are urging people to support this day of action because the TPPA contains threats to our health system, our public services, our ability to use government purchasing to develop our economy and improve our environment and working conditions, and our right to make changes to our laws and regulations in the interests of most New Zealanders.”

The TPPA increases the power of international corporations and reduces the power of elected governments and their citizens to resist corporate demands.

'It is the wrong kind of international agreement for working people, New Zealand and the world,” adds Helen.

Executive Director of Greenpeace Bunny McDiarmid says that, 'this anti-trade deal should be stopped. It puts the interests of foreign corporates above those of kiwis and is a threat to our seas, our air, our economy and our health.”

If asked

I wonder how many could properly explain what they were protesting about? I would guess that some where there simply to protest against the present government and that would suggest a RENT-A-MOB call has gone out.

Be Informed

You "would guess", and wrongly. If you are not sufficiently informed about the reasons concerned citizens are protesting against the potential for global corporations to be able to dictate law changes to suit their greedy agenda and be able to sue the Government if they don't get the result that suits them, then you are the one who does not know enough to see a valid protest when it is in plain view. Inform yourself! "Trans-Pacific Partnership" in Wikipedia shows this started in 2005 - before the present Government attained office. The protest is against the conditions of the "agreement" being accepted by ANY Government of New Zealand. The corporates who stand to gain most from this rely upon the apathy and ignorance of a populace too lazy to think about it.

Did you attend, and if not, is it because you don't give a damn....Everyone I spoke to, knew EXACTLY why they took the time out of their Saturday to attend.

Nothing better to do

I don't know what they are protesting about. Guess they gave nothing better to do. Wake up you lot. We actually live and trade in a world market.

everyone I talked to there knew what they were protesting about, people they have done their research. personally I have spent hours reading what i can find about the (secret) TPPA - the more I read the more scared I become which is what you should be if this goes through - which is why I am finally going to a protest rally the first time in my life.

To the RENT-A-MOB

I spend many hours reading the INTERNATIONAL news and I viewed the national television news last night and I am still very poorly informed about the events that you are so stridently opposed to. Try using Wikipedia in a university paper as a creditable reference and see what you are told about that rubbish! I have read and heard on the News, many talking heads that put themselves up as speaking for "the people" using words such as "may" "might" "could" and "possibly" You have all been out on the streets KNOWING nothing definite (Even the union organiser interviewed said "Might") I would agree that having been hoodwinked into signing KYOTO we need to be cautious about signing up to international agreements but lets not get bent out of shape until we know what we are talking about. We need jobs and employment not speculative rhetoric.

TPPA = corporate dictatorship.

There is still a lot of misinformation out there about TPPA. One of its goals being to allow multi-national corporates to overrule our democratically elected government. One way that will happen is that all our medicines will cost heaps more.

For mine, and yours......

Many who attended like myself don't know a heck of a lot about the finer details of the proposed agreement. That is why I attended. I came away a little more informed, met people who gave me tools as where I can find out more. That is what, for me, this rally was about. It doesn't surprise me there are those who choose not to get involved, however throwing ignorant insults to dull the sharp edge of the reality of it all does none but anger and sadden us willing and wanting to fight for a better future for us ALL. None the less, being the voice for those who have none, like my future generations, is what we will continue to do. Oh, and I guess yours too hmmm...

You have got that so wrong! The TPPA is not a political issue its about truth and transparency by any Government whoever they are. This agreement is for big corporations and it will not benefit any individual Kiwi. I was part of the organizing committee for the national roll out of protests and a lot of work went into getting information out there, to say it was a rent-a -mob shows your absolute ignorance in these matters. Why didnt you get off your chuff and get down to the protest to actually find out about the TPPA,there was a lot of pertinent information shared on the day, by people who do know what they are talking about.I dont know where you have done your "research" as there is plenty of information about it out there and NOT on wikipedia; which by the way is NOT accepted by Universities as a reference.
