Western Bay people had a chance to try out Waka Ama on Tauranga Harbour with their friends and families on Sunday afternoon.

Waka Ama was one of the activities on Sunday’s Live to Play Month calendar.
More than 60 people waited patiently in line for a chance to go outrigger canoeing, even if it meant lining up for half an hour.
Tauranga Moana Outrigger Canoe Club vice president Roger Colquhoun says the sport Waka Ama originated in Hawaii and is a popular sport in Tauranga.
“Our club has 60 members and has been running for 20 years now.”

The ‘Have a go’ day is part of the 100 events Tauranga people can participate in throughout October during Live to Play Month.
“It makes a lot of sense if people can get involved with these activities.”
People who wish to try out the sport can turn up to the Tauranga Moana Outrigger Canoe Club at Sulphur Point on Sundays at 3pm and have a go for $2.
“If it’s something you want to continue with we can slot you in a team for your age group,” says Roger.
