Tribute to family man Graeme

The son of Omokoroa man Graeme Ramsay has described him as an outdoors man who lived for his family.

The 63-year-old passed away earlier this week while working on his car at his home in Omokoroa on Tuesday morning.

He was working underneath a Nissan Primera when the car slipped off the jacks.

Graeme's death has been referred to the coroner.

Speaking to SunLive this morning, his son Mark Ramsay spoke of Graeme's love of fishing, hunting and tramping, and described a dad who lived for his family.

'He liked everything outdoors really,” says Mark. 'In sailing, he was commodore of the Mount club for a few years and he was in the Omokoroa Boat Club for years. He taught us all to sail and got us boats and everything.”

Graeme also had a passion for cars and was a regular at the Drivers Bar on 11th Ave.

'He was quite reserved,” adds Mark. 'By the same token, he was very smart and intelligent and everything he did was mainly for his family. He was very family orientated.”

Mark says his father would do anything for his family and he would always help people out if they needed stuff done in the community.

'He was quite intuitive and could do pretty much anything,” he says. 'He built our family home in Omokoroa. He and my granddad built it and we have lived in it for 25 years. We are still living in the house today.

'He was just a really nice guy - no one would ever say anything bad about him because there was nothing bad to say about him.”

Graeme lived in Tauranga for around 40 years after moving from his hometown of Hamilton. He and his wife Sue had two sons, Mark and Grant.

Mark describes his father as a man who didn't have a gripe with anyone.

'All his customers at work loved him,” he says. 'They got to know Dad and they would always go back and ask for him.”

A service to celebrate Graeme's life will be held at Tauranga Park on Pyes Pa Road at 10am on Sunday.

The service will be followed by a private cremation.
