Title rematch in college cricket

Round two of the WBOPCA First XI competition sees a rematch of last season's championship final between Aquinas and Bethlehem Colleges, with both sides bringing first up victories into the encounter.

In last season's title decider, Aquinas College, came from a six point deficit behind Bethlehem College, to win the WBOPCA Schools Division One cricket title.

Aquinas won the toss and elected to bat and lost their first batsmen with a solid 58 runs on the board.

The 130 run partnership between Andrew Norman, who top scored with 84, and Reuben Fitzgerald, put Aquinas in strong position.

Fitzgerald was still at the wicket with an unbeaten 70 as Aquinas posted 215/4.

Bethlehem lost early wickets before Patrick Davenport (32) Bill Burnett (26) and Mitch Fairweather (26) consolidated the Bethlehem turn at bat. Bethlehem were restricted to 141/9 to hand Aquinas the title, with Louis Robinson, playing his first game for the Aquinas First XI, taking three wickets.

Tauranga Boys College Third XI, will also take an unbeaten record into their battle of the bridge clash with Mount Maunganui Gold, at Nicholson Field.

Mount Gold draws their players from both Mount Maunganui and Papamoa College's and play under the auspices of the Mount Maunganui Cricket Club.

A Bay of Plenty inter-region derby will take place in the third First XI match-up of the weekend.

Eastern Bay of Plenty's Trident High School, who play in the WBOPCA Secondary School competition by invitation, travel to play Otumoetai College at home with the winner banking their first points of the competition.

Division One: Otumoetai College v Trident HS, Tauranga Boys College3 v Mount Maunganui Gold, Aquinas College v Bethlehem College.
